Solar Panel Installation Process

So, you’ve decided that all the benefits of solar panels are worth your time—the savings, incentives, and environmental benefits. What actually happens when it’s time to install your new solar panels? What process do solar providers follow? Here’s some general guidelines for what you can expect as you start your solar journey.

Pre-installation

1.Choosing an installer

There are many different companies for solar energy, but you want a reliable provider in order to ensure good quality. Be sure to do your research, looking at reviews and pricing. For example, CRJ Contractors is BBB accredited, and is a top rated contractor on platforms like Google, Home Advisor, and Angie’s List. These are the credentials you want when considering a solar panel company.

2.Calculating your budget

Once you’ve chosen a provider, it is important to consider your budget to determine what size and type of solar panels you want. If the building is commercial vs. a home, this could also make a difference. Consult with your solar energy provider to determine the best fit for you.

3.On-site reviews

Next, two different reviews of your building are conducted by professionals. The first is a general inspection of your building by the company in order to estimate the size of the system and any problems that could arise. Next the building is more thoroughly reviewed by a solar energy engineer, whose job is to calculate how much energy will be produced by the system and how to maximize energy intake.

4.Paperwork

Usually this is handled by the company, but it’s good to know what’s happening behind the scenes. During this time the company applies for incentives that will help cover the cost along with building permits to install the panels. You may have to sign some documents during this stage, but mostly it’s just waiting.

5.Ordering equipment

Depending on the magnitude of your system, the company may already have the parts, or they might need to order them.

The big day
1.Prepping the roof

Finally, the big day arrives. The first step installers complete is prepping the roof. This includes securing loose shingles or tiles, wiring the electric system, and installing racks to hold the panels.

  1. Connecting panels

Then come the panels themselves. The large panels are laid in the racks and secured, then hooked up the electric system. This is a fairly quick process for angled roofs, but longer for flat.

  1. Setting up the inverter

Lastly, the inverter is set up in order to convert the direct current (DC) produced into alternating current (AC) that the grid supports. This allows the energy from your solar panels to be used to power your whole building. Now you have solar energy!  All together the solar installation process takes around 1-3 days depending on the size and condition of the roof.

Post-installation

1.Approval

However, the solar panels will not run until you have received approval from local government. A member of the government, usually the utilities company, reviews your house for one final inspection. This ensures that the panels are safe and to the code.

  1. Flipping the switch

Once the standards have been met, the switch is flipped. This allows energy to be converted from the solar panels into the grid, and therefore into your building.

  1. Completion

Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of solar panels, saving you money and helping the environment.
